That’s a lot of questions! First how to get rid of stuff – depends on the stuff. For chemicals, paint, fertilizers and the like contact your city or county solid waste department (call the main city, or county number and they should put you through). They will be able to tell you how and when to dispose of each specific item properly. For general “stuff” try craigslist, ebay, amazon, freecycle, yardsales, and charities.

As to why we are attached to stuff, I have come across 2 sites that may or may not apply, but are still interesting to watch – http://www.storyofstuff.com/ and a series on You tube – http://youtube.com/results?search_query=the+century+of+self&search_type=&aq=f. According to these, we, as a society, have been programmed to consume. There are many, many other reasons possible, but the other reasons are not as easily posted (or as interesting to see).

As for how to stay that way, getting it cleaned will be great motivation and if you plan regular maintenance – say each spring during spring cleaning, you can keep it up. There are many great sites and companies that specialize in garage storage that might be worth checking out once you have gotten most of it cleared and know what you really are keeping and need to store long term.

I am the same way — attached to so many things.
Honestly… you just got to get rid of what you don’t need. it’s difficult, but it has to be done. I got my boyfriend to help me clean my closet. He made me not help out, because he knew I would have a problem. He did keep the things that are usable and can be resold. Keep the important things. Make a promise to yourself, for every ten or twelve things you give away, keep one!

Organize by using shelves, hooks and plenty of storage totes. Shelves for big things, such as coolers, toolboxes, other boxes… even the storage boxes themselves.

Use storage boxes for smaller items, such as books, roller skates, helmets, sports items. You can organize the storage totes too! Make one for winter clothes, make another for sports items, and so on! This will help!

For hooks, put bikes, ladders, and anything that can be hung up easily.

Have a garage sale for the things you decided to give away, this can help with the cost of those items!

Also! HGTV.com, Lowes and Home Depot have great ideas for further house organization (including the garage!) Visit Lowes or Home Depot, or visit that site!
